New chief executive of BluGlass – Giles Bourne
Giles Bourne has seen the light – literally. The commercialisation specialist is the new chief executive of BluGlass, a promising Australian clean technology company trying to break into the $US100 billion ($103 billion) general lighting market. Bourne had plenty of practice for the job: he became interim chief of BluGlass in January after former head David Jordan resigned unexpectedly for personal reasons.

New Plant For BluGlass Ltd’s Energy Efficient Lighting Technology
Australian energy efficient lighting technology pioneer BluGlass Limited today announced it was ready to market its innovative light emitting diode technology internationally. At the opening of its innovative LED pilot demonstration plant in Sydney, the company said the new facility would enable BluGlass to demonstrate the commercial capability of its cost-cutting green technology as it pursues sales to global lighting industry majors and semi-conductor makers.

BluGlass Limited (ASX:BLG) has been awarded a $460,000 Australian Research Council (ARC) grant to help commercialise its Remote Plasma Chemical Vapour Deposition (RPCVD) technology, which can cut the cost of producing energy efficient lighting.

Spreading the Light
The research began at Macquarie University and now promises to make an impact world wide. LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are a way of illuminating without the inefficiencies of traditional bulbs -- which are essentially intense heaters pretending to be lights. Giles Bourne of the company BluGlass tells how they took a bright idea in physics and turned it into a business venture. Can this be a model for university-based innovation?
