BluGlass is seeking an experienced and highly motivated laser diode professional to join our US based team in this senior role

Senior Laser Scientist will be responsible for leading design & development efforts for BluGlass proprietary next generation GaN based UV/VIS laser-technology for use in the Industrial, Display, AR/VR, Automotive, General lighting and Biotech markets. Candidates must have experience proposing novel scientific concepts as solutions to relevant, complex technical problems, ideally within Commercial as well as Defense and/or Government-funded industries.   Candidates must demonstrate expert analytical and practical laboratory-based experience in multiple opto-electronic technologies including: FP, DFB, DBR, or VCSEL semiconductor lasers or Superluminescent LED’s.

Established in 2005, BluGlass is an internationally recognized Australian semiconductor technology developer bringing to market a breakthrough semiconductor manufacturing technology in the LED, laser diode and power electronics industries. With the recent launch of its Laser Diode business unit, and the establishment of its US based test facility, this US based role presents an exciting opportunity in the Company’s growth phase to be joining this world-leading team and make your mark in the development of next generation laser diode solutions.  


Oversee all technical aspects of design and development of next generation GaN Diode Lasers that leverage the advantages of BluGlass proprietary Remote Plasma CVD (RPCVD) deposition technology and corresponding process advantages.


Laser Design & Development:

  • Theoretical design/analysis & practical construction of Gallium Nitride based FP, DFB and Single Frequency Discrete Laser Components.

  • Define key technical objectives and manage tasks/project through the various development phases (concept, demonstration, development, qualification, and production) to meet program milestones.

  • Collaborate with BLG internal epitaxial design & growth group to determine optimal epitaxial wafer design and growth parameters.


  • Collaborate with external wafer fabrication (foundry) partners to determine mask layout and laser process development (lithography, wet etching, plasma etching, metal and dielectric deposition systems, implantation, and oxidation)

  • Develop numerical modelling tools (including Software Tools) used in the design and prediction of laser diode performance.

  • Collaborate with testing and reliability group and participate in the design and setup of new test systems needed to measure laser diode performance

  • Develop and assemble prototype laser hardware


Technical Program Leadership:

  • Maintains knowledge of state-of-the-art principles for the advancement of performance of laser diodes.

  • Monitor Laser Diode performance in development and production

  • Report performance metrics to project teams and management.

  • Participate in development of Patent Applications.

  • Publish & Present BLG results at Industry Events & Trade shows.


Custom Laser Development support:

  • Respond to Government/R&D solicitations for new GaN based Laser Diode opportunities.

  • Participate in design reviews with internal and external customers.


  • Masters’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or Materials Science with 8+ years of experience or a PhD +3 years of experience in GaN based Laser/Laser Diode environment

  • Experience in design & development and integration of discrete laser diode components such as FP, DFB/ DBR or VCSEL, including prior research and publication.

  • Experience in Gallium Nitride materials systems (design/modeling, epitaxy, fabrication or testing) is highly desirable.

  • Strong math, physics and general engineering understanding. A good candidate should be able to adapt to problems involving differential equations, statistics, linear algebra, numerical methods, software and hardware implementations

  • Demonstrated leadership ability and the ability to direct and influence the organization across multiple functional departments is essential. Strong team player.

  • Publications in referenced technical journals

  • Development and execution of a technical research strategy

  • Expertise and experience in performing on projects within the Defense/Government market is desirable.

  • Strong organizational and decision-making skills.

  • Good communication skills (both oral and written) are required


Position is to be based out of the BluGlass USA Test & Reliability facility located in Nashua, NH.  Remote working for this position is possible but occasional travel to BluGlass USA and BluGlass headquarters located just outside Sydney Australia may be required. Aspects of this position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22C.F.R. §120.15 are required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee is preferred.
